What to Look for in a 17in LCD Flat Panel Monitor

There are many types of monitors, ranging from tiny to over 30 inches, there are CRTs and LCDs

and a wide variety of quality levels. However, for general use such as internet surfing, office applications or home use, a 17–inch LCD for less than $300 should do the job.

We looked at monitors with comparable resolutions, dot pitch, size and color ability. Most of the monitors have thin bezels and are available with black cabinets. If you are a gamer or graphic artist, you will want a monitor with a fast response time, less than eight milliseconds, and a good color ratio of 1000:1 or more. If you just want a monitor for general use, a color ratio of 600:1 and a speed less than 12ms will be fine.

However, beyond the general features of a monitor, many offer additional features such as extra USB ports, integrated speakers or pivot ability. So once you find a monitor with an acceptable display, consider extra features that may interest you.

Keep in mind that preferences vary, before ordering online it may be good idea to go into a retail outlet and view the screens to see which monitor looks good to you. We compared the specs and abilities, but appearance is often a matter of opinion.

Below are the criteria TopTenREVIEWS used to evaluate 17in LCD Flat Panel Monitors:

  • Display – We evaluated 17–inch flat panel monitors with a resolution of 1280(H) X 1024(V) with a dot pitch of 0.264mm, generally these monitors have a color range of 16.1 to 16.7 million. Since it is difficult to find all of the details of a particular monitor, we compared contrast ratio, response time and brightness. The better monitors have a contrast ratio of over 500:1, a response time of less than 12ms and a brightness of around 300 cd/m2.
  • Ergonomic Adjustments – Since people often spend hours in front of their monitors, it is a plus if they are adjustable. Most monitors can be tilted, but the best can also pivot, swivel and most significantly be raised or lowered.
  • Feature Set – Outside of displaying images, monitors offer a variety of extra features. Some include integrated speakers and headphone jacks, and others offer a Kensington lock slot, USB ports or pivot technology. We also assessed power use and power saving features.
  • Product Support – Some computer users are unfamiliar with installing hardware or errors occur, so it is useful if the manufacture provides comprehensive documentation as well as telephone and email support.

Why Upgrade to a LCD Flat Panel Monitor?

The latest LCD Flat Panel Monitors are slim, stylish and offer an improved display over aged monitors. A flat panel is not the same as a flat screen, flat panels are flat screened and thin, usually less than 2.5 inches without the stand.

Here are a few more reasons to upgrade to a Flat Panel Monitor:

  • Save Desk Space – New flat panels are only 6 to 10 inches wide including the stand.
  • Speed – If you’re a gamer, you will notice the difference between a slow response time and a fast. Slow monitors flicker, blur or have ghosting, but the newer screens under 8 or 12ms do not have this kind of image distortion. Some monitors have a response time as low as four milliseconds.
  • Wall Display – Thin monitors, less than 2 inches thick can be wall mounted as interactive art or simply to save space.
  • Attach to an Arm – You can attach flat panel monitors to an extendable arm that is mounted to a wall, desk or other device and will move any way you want. This is especially helpful for multi–media applications, so the monitor can be in one position for general computer work and a different for video viewing.
  • Color Dimension LCD monitors have caught up with the CRT in color display and depth ability. The best can display over 16.7 million colors and have a color ratio of 1000:1 or more.
  • USB Ports – Dell includes handy USB ports right on the monitor, so you can easily plug in cameras, music players or camcorders for quick downloads or uploads.
  • Pivot Technology – Some manufactures offer pivot technology, which means you can turn the monitor tall or longwise on its side and the image will re–orientate to an upright position.
  • Save Energy – Innovative, efficient monitors use less than 35 watts and less than 2W on standby.

8800 gts testing

I a chance to take the cooler off one of the Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB cards and do some basic benchmarketing.

The card we tested worked at 500MHz core and 1600MHz memory but some manufacturers might have the faster clocks.

The whole 10 yards of memory chips of Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB

The NDA about this card expires on Monday but why shouldn't you read about it today?

Good morning America, let me introduce the Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB. The card has the good old G80 chip with its small external I/O chip that couldn't fit on the G80 die. The company uses Hynix memory hy5as573225a that can work at 320 Mbit. It specs say it's 256-bit memory at 1.4ns and of course GDDR3 flavoured but it works just fine with this card.

Instead of twelve memory chips the card has ten of them. Ten times thirty two gives you 320MB of memory. The card scores 28000 in 3Dmark03, 15000 at 3Dmark05 and 8800 in 3Dmark06. In games it pulls more than 100 FPS at 16x12. It looks fast to me.

We will give you a few numbers for the weekend and next week we will give you more scores.

Handbag product review

Alternative title: Even superior materials and construction aren't enough to break into higher price points.

This is a different kind of product review. It will apply to handbag producers and those of you moving up another level. There are some contradictions with this product in spite of it being very well constructed and the use of excellent materials. If you've trying to move up into a higher price point, it may not be enough to have the best construction and the best materials. As you'll see, there's design elements that cannot be ignored.

My sample is a very well made leather bag that nonetheless, had some unusual problems. Shortly after I got it, the DE told me it was being dropped. By then I had some ideas why it wasn't being picked up on reorders but I didn't have a way to tell the producer tactfully. Besides, it takes time to do a product review and it's inappropriate to critique something someone gives you (we traded) and worse, attempt to turn it into a revenue generating event. What is one to do? This happens to me all of the time.

First some history which explains some of the deficits I found.

This DE hasn't always made nice leather bags. Before, he targeted the low end of the market, knew the market and the process very well. He also had extensive and reputable overseas contacts who had excellent construction experience. In other words, he had everything. If so, how did things go wrong?

In a nutshell, the problem was a marriage of uneven expectations. The construction is top notch but the contractor -who made the patterns- was adept at low margin goods. Just because something is low margin doesn't mean it is poorly sewn and these were well constructed. One problem was a mismatch of material usage and hardware in targeting a higher price point. Here are some contradictions:

Materials
Other than the hardware, all of the materials used in the bag are top notch. The lining is outstanding, a durable, sturdy, classy satin twill. The leather was exemplary, perfectly matched to the price point. The hides are thick enough, pebbled so it wears well and it doesn't scratch readily. If scratched, it doesn't show easily as it's been well processed. No quibble with the shell of the piece, it is entirely appropriate to the higher price point. The problem was utilization of the leather. As the contractor is accustomed to paring allocation to the bone, that level of economy was inappropriate for this market segment. Specifically, the top portion of this side panel needed to be longer, extending deeper into the side, say another two inches or so. The lining should never be visible under usual and normal usage.

Hardware
In the above photo, you most likely wondered about that black thing retaining the side panel. That would be velcro. Ouch. It's not an issue of color either. Velcro can used in $7 plastic bags but not in fine Italian pebbled leather bags. A metal magnetic closure would have been a better choice.

Construction
There were two other construction details that could have been improved. First was the lining of the side panel. The lining should have been tacked to the seam at the bottom of the bag. This would have prevented the lining from showing to the extent it was. Your linings should always be tacked into place. And now that I've done this review, I can repair mine. It bugs me. Below is a photo showing that the side panel lining is loose.

The second construction detail bearing improvement was the ends of the handles. These are rolled handles with cord fillers. The rolled portion should have been sewn down further. Below, the handles are down and the ends, where it joins the bag, just looks odd to me.

In the photo below, off to far right and far left, you can see the ends of the filler are visible. Sewing the handles down a bit farther, perhaps another inch or so, would have made this nicer.

In summary, the bag's construction and materials were largely intact but it still missed the mark for the targeted market. I'm sorry the DE decided to drop the style, it was a nice sturdy bag, designed to hold a lap top with roomy inside pockets to hold peripherals and a neoprene like cushion sleeve to contain the computer itself. Nice size and it doesn't look like a corporate briefcase so it suited me. I think it would have been better to have improved these minor details. The per unit costs would have been minimal, amounting to an additional sewing operation (tacking the side panel lining), two magnetic clasps (less than 50 cents) and another quarter square foot of leather. Another cost to the whole batch would have been the cost of two new dies for the longer upper side panels.

Wanna more lovely hand bags?

What is an External Hard Drive?

A hard drive is a storage device that holds computer data. Every computer needs at least one hard drive to store its operating system, programs and information, and this drive is usually internal. However, as computer systems have evolved and different needs, threats, and circumstances have arisen, the additional external hard drive has become extremely popular.

Internet access regularly exposes computers to potential security threats like Trojan horses, viruses and spyware. It has become increasingly difficult to guard against these threats, even employing firewalls and antivirus programs. Aside from online threats, multiple family members often use the same system, putting sensitive documents at higher risk of inadvertent corruption or loss. And finally, the space required for multimedia storage has soared with MP3s, streaming video, DVD burning, and imaging. All of these unrelated concerns can be addressed with one simple answer: an external hard drive.

An external hard drive sits outside the main computer tower in its own enclosure. The enclosure is slightly larger than the hard drive itself, and sometimes contains a cooling fan. This portable encasement allows the user to store information on a hard drive that is not inside the computer, but rests on a tabletop or surface nearby the computer. The external hard drive is connected to the computer via a high-speed interface cable. The interface cable allows the external hard drive to communicate with the computer so that data may be passed back and forth. The most common types of interfaces are USB and Firewire.

A portable or external hard drive is quite a useful piece of equipment. It allows the user to back up or store important information off the main drive, which could become compromised by online or offline activities. Sensitive documents, large music files, DVD images, movies, disk images, and even a backup of your main internal hard drive, can all be kept securely and safely on an external hard drive. When you are online, you can even leave the external drive turned off.

Another advantage of an external hard drive is that it is portable and operates on a plug-and-play basis. Any computer with USB or Firewire capability will recognize the external hard drive as a storage device, and assign it a letter. The drive can then be accessed like a normal internal hard drive. It's a snap to transfer huge files back and forth from work to home, to a friend's house, or between your desktop and laptop. Just plug in the interface cable to quickly reconstruct a working environment, making your favorite programs portable. One can easily transfer entire gigabytes of data.

If you have multiple family members using your computer system, consider an external hard drive to keep financial information and other sensitive documents secure. When you are ready to use the computer, you can plug in the external drive and have all your data and programs available. When finished, simply unplug the drive and take it with you to lock in a drawer or other secure location.

There are inexhaustible reasons to get an external hard drive. You can even buy several hard drives and swap them in and out of the same enclosure, using one for multimedia storage, one for imaging and backup, and so on.

An external hard drive allows for so much flexibility and peace of mind, that once you acquire one, you will likely never be without one again.

Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro Review,

The successor to Fuji's FinePix S3 Pro made its first, fleeting appearence at Photokina in September 2006, though it didn't start shipping until the spring of 2007 - keeping in line with Fuji's approx two-year gap between SLR models. The S5 Pro may have the same sensor (well, almost - more about that later) as the S3 Pro, but as a camera it is a quantum leap forward over the models that preceded it, being based on the highly-regarded Nikon D200 (all the previous models were based on consumer level Nikon film cameras).

Being essentially a D200 with a Super CCD sensor and Fuji processor means the S5 Pro enjoys all the benefits of Nikon's superb 'semi pro' body; weather-sealed body with a magnesium alloy chassis, latest generation focus, flash and metering systems, better shutter, better viewfinder and expansive lens compatibility. It is also the first Fuji SLR to be a truly 'integrated' digital camera; previous models were based on film cameras (supplied by Nikon) which forced Fuji to use a clunky 'camera of two halves' design, complicating control (and in the early models meaning the 'digital' and 'camera' parts had separate batteries). Finally there are some changes under the hood, including a tweaked sensor, new processor and a host of minor (and a few major) feature upgrades.

The S3 Pro - despite a hefty price tag - carved out a niche for itself amongst wedding and portrait photographers willing to sacrifice speed and durability in order to take advantage of the extra dynamic range offered by the SR sensor. On paper the S5 Pro (which has a smaller $400 price premium over the Nikon D200) seems to address most of the issues we - and many potential purchasers - had with the S3 Pro, so let's find out if it delivers...
